Starting therapy can be a daunting task, but there are resources that provide a step by step guide to make the process simpler. This NPR article is an excellent guide that starts where many others of its type miss – acknowledging and overcoming the stigma associated with mental health care. While many aspects of pop culture are normalizing the act of seeking mental wellness, years of stigma can be hard to overcome.
A good first step is to reframe therapy for yourself. “I think of seeing a therapist as just getting a second opinion about what you’re doing,” says Pahoua Yang, vice president of community mental health and wellness at the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation. “And then you can decide from there.”
